Liebe Musikfreunde und -freundinnen!

Ein Piano hat 88 Tasten. Und so wird am 29. März, dem 88. Tag des Jahres, weltweit der PIANO DAY gefeiert.

Vor 10 Jahren iniziiert vom deutschen Pianisten & Elektromusiker Nils Frahm, ist dieser Tag inzwischen eine feste Institution. Überall auf der Welt machen Pianisten und Pianistinnen besondere Veranstaltungen, um diesem wunderbaren Instrument zu huldigen.

Dem konnte und wollte auch ich mich nicht entziehen.

Deswegen nutze ich diesen Tag um eine ganz besondere Idee in die Tat umzusetzten, die mich schon eine Weile umtreibt und auf die mich mein Freund und Kollege, der Videokünstler Gene Aichner gebracht hat.

Wir hatten über audiophile Ereignisse, die spezielle Magie des Moments und die neue Faszination für "alte" Medien gesprochen, als er fragte, warum ich nicht einmal einen "direct cut" mache.

Ein solcher direct cut – Direktschnitt – ist sowas wie das letzte Abenteuer in der Tonstudiowelt. War es früher die einzige Möglichkeit, überhaupt etwas aufzunehmen, ist es heute eher unüblich daß man ohne Netz und doppelten Boden eine Aufnahme macht, die direkt auf eine Vinylscheibe geritzt wird.

Es kann nichts korrigiert, nichts nachgemischt oder angeglichen, geschwiege denn ausgetauscht werden.

Das ist riskant und nicht beliebig wiederholbar, weil man sonst Unmengen von Vinylfolien verbraucht. Trotzdem birgt es einen unglaublichen Reiz – nicht nur weil man wirklich verlustfrei alles direkt auf's Medium bringt, keine Digitalisierung, nicht mal eine Verfremdung durch eine Bandmaschine.

Auch die besondere Spannung des Moments, ähnlich wie bei einem Live-Konzert, spielt eine Rolle und ich habe unheimlich Lust, das einmal auszuprobieren.

Dazu werde ich zwei Stücke aufnehmen. Eines davon hatte letztes Jahr schon eine Live-Premiere (ELEKTRA), das zweite ist komplett neu und erfährt eine Erstaufführung. Beide werde ich an einem realtiv neuen Setup rund um mein RHODES-PIANO spielen.

Aber der Herausforderung noch nicht genug. Anlässlich des INTERNATIONAL PIANO DAY möchte ich den ganzen Prozess, auch mit entsprechendem Vorlauf, technischen Vorbereitungen, etc., als Live-Stream über meinen YouTube-Kanal sowie über Instagram übertragen. Auch das ist nicht ganz einfach, aber ich habe ein großartiges Team gefunden für dieses kleine Herzensprojekt, und ich bin sicher, wir kriegen das hin.

Das Ereignis, das live aus dem Organic Sound Studio in Obing übertragen wird, kommt dann in allernächster Zeit als 12'' Vinylscheibe heraus und erscheint bei JAZZHAUS RECORDS!

A piano has 88 keys. And so on March 29, the 88th day of the year, PIANO DAY is celebrated worldwide.

Initiated 10 years ago by German pianist and electronic musician Nils Frahm, this day has since become a permanent institution. Pianists all over the world hold special events to pay homage to this wonderful instrument.

I couldn't and didn't want to escape this either.

That's why I'm using this day to realize a very special idea that has been on my mind for a while and which my friend and colleague, the video artist Gene Aichner, gave me.

We had been talking about audiophile events, the special magic of the moment and the new fascination with “old” media when he asked why I didn't do a “direct cut”.

A direct cut is like the last adventure in the audio studio world. Whereas in the past it was the only way to record anything at all, today it is rather unusual to make a recording that is scratched directly onto a vinyl record without a 2nd change.

Nothing can be corrected, nothing can be remixed or adjusted or exchanged.

This is risky and cannot be repeated at will, because otherwise you would use up vast amounts of vinyl. Nevertheless, it has an unbelievable appeal - not only because you can really put everything directly onto the medium without any loss, no digitization, not even any artefacts by a tape machine.

The special tension of the moment, similar to a live concert, also plays a role and I really want to try it out.

I will be recording two pieces for this. One of them already had a live premiere last year (ELEKTRA), the second is completely new and will have its premiere. I will be playing both on a relatively new setup centred around my RHODES-PIANO.

But the challenge is not enough. On the occasion of INTERNATIONAL PIANO DAY, I would like to broadcast the whole process, including the hours before, technical preparations, etc., as a live stream via my YouTube channel and Instagram. That's not easy either, but I've found a great team for this little project close to my heart and I'm sure we'll manage it.
